SONIC LOST WORLD is Sonic X-TREME?

This is the debut trailer of Sonic Lost World and from this trailer it looks very different from its predecessors. Series producer Takashi Iizuka says the team is focused on “creating an all-new design for 3D Sonic games”  that is very much this case. While many gamers, have been quick to point out this game’s resemblance to Super Mario Galaxy, when I first watched this my mind immediately thought of the never-released game Sonic X-Treme.

For those who don’t know Sonic X-treme is that was suppose to release in 1996 for the Sega Saturn however the game was never completed. It would have Sega’s answer to Super Mario 64 and the first fully 3D Sonic game. Despite this video of Sonic X-Treme can be found all over the net and to me Lost World looks more silimar to X-Treme than it does to Mario Galaxy. What do you think?

Sonic X-treme had a open 3D world which an emphasis to “go anywhere and run”

Some Sonic fans are be a bit peeved that only Sonic will be playable but I believe this to be a step in the right direction. Sega should focus perfectly Sonic’s gameplay before messing with other characters. It’s early days but so far I’m really impressed and series producer Ilzuka is saying all the things I want to hear .  A more open-world which focuses less on linear running and more on platforming. It’s becoming more and more of a shame that I’m ultimately going to miss out on this game as Sonic Lost World is exclusive to Nintendo consoles the Wii U and 3DS.

  1. “Sega are not allowed to mess with multiple characters until Sonic’s 3D gameplay is perfected as far as I’m concerned.”
Damn you sound stupid. Sonic’s gameplay was always good in some way, and you’re looking for perfection? from Sega of Japan no less? I guess those who actually like those other characters are up shit creek then as far you are concerned, cause that’s what it sounds like.

    • Please don’t get all butt-hurt on me. Hear me out. When was the last time Sega released a fully 3D Sonic game? Sonic ’06. The 3D sections in Unleashed barely had much platforming as they were mostly in the 2D sections. Generations is also like this but to a lesser extent.

Colors, Generations and Unleashed, while good games, didn’t contain enough 3D platforming as far as I’m concerned. One of the many problems of Sonic 06 was that they were sooo many characters to deal that they didn’t take the time to fine-tune any of them. That’s is my point. Its easier to focus on gameplay style that multiple ones. No, I don’t literally mean “perfection” but solid 3D platforming experience at least.

FYI, SA2 is one of my favorite games and I enjoyed playing as all the characters.

The number of characters didn’t have shit to do with that, the game was rushed/underdeveloped, so of course it was gonna be messed up anyway, or did you forget how messed up the Sonic 1 port for GBA was, or sonic 4, which didn’t contain any other characters at all. Case in point, sonic had games people considered bad when he was alone alone, so just because 06 was messed up and had a lot of characters don’t mean nothing at all. Besides, they only had 3 more characters the the adventure games, which people like yourself still consider the best, 3 less the heroes which was mixed, and Shadow was alone in his game while most people hated. You can’t equate quantity for the lack of quality, not to mention 6 of the heroes in 06 were amigo’s in the first place, barely getting the chance to be in 3 levels, and even then, were only segments, unless you got the amigo DLC, which had more levels for Tails(who could move faster), Blaze, and Omega.
Let me also point out that the game lost a lot of content before it released, like the real day and night system, the rainbow gym, and Sonic actually riding in a buggy with Shadow, and the PS3 version was even worse then the 360 version, as far as I heard.
So, you really gonna blame the number of characters for the game for all it’s happenings, despite it being rushed in the first place? I’ve played games that frustrated me more with less characters and actually being finished. To note, 06 didn’t frustrate me, I was one of those lucky few not to experience all the glitches(or look for them then complain), and I enjoyed playing it more then any game after Unleashed, and Black is almost an exception but it had those dam motion controls.

      • Actually, 3D platforming is inherently flawed and can never be perfected. Platforming is being able to determine your jumps effectivily to reach the next platform, but that can only be done with proper depth perception. 3D platforming doesn’t allow for proper depth perception unless the camera is situated overhead. How can you judge distance in three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional screen?

      • You’re mis-interpreting what I meant.

Basically, in Unleashed only the 2D Sections featuring platforming while the 3D sections were largely limited to boosting speed sections.

I’ve never played Colours but I hear is predominately 2D and from what I’ve seen the 3D sections looks rather simplistic. In Generations, there isn’t much serious 3D platforming sections imo. The last level Planet Wisp for example was mostly 2D. However the 3D sections are more open and less linear. When I perfected platforming I don’t literally mean perfect. ‘Perfect’ doesn’t exist. I just ask for a complete solid 3D Sonic experience. I like the look of Lost World. =)

  2. I’m well aware the game was rushed but do you not think that, even under the very same time frame, that if they had solely focused on Sonic’s gameplay, then at least his part of the game would have been better. I’m not solely blaming multiple characters for 06 being bad but that is one of the reasons.

Also, you seem to be missing the point entirely. Mutlple characters doesn’t equal a bad Sonic game by default but that does mean that the developers spend less time fine-tuning Sonic’s gameplay. Sonic comes first and his gameplay should be of a good standard before implementing other characters. Would you call Sonic’s gameplay in 06 a good standard??

FYI, the original trilogy are the best games =)

Again, games with less characters were still regarded as bad even after being finished, so your whole point is defeated. You’re still trying to cast blame on the aspect of the other characters for the shortcoming of an entire finished game. Even then, that game is almost 7 years old, and nothing but a dead horse. We had better games before it, and even then, SA1 and 2 were made by a different team, so instead of blaming the characters, ask the devs to get their shit together, and if they can’t get someone who can. We can’t just keep missing out on other characters cause all waiting for sonic to be perfected, which his gameplay is nothing but spectacle in the first place, showing off the power of consoles like he was made to do for the Gensis. The problem being, every other game not only beats him in spectacle, but also delver on other content to make them even more enjoyable.
Case in point, you whole logic revolves around the fact that 06 was just a lost cause, and cutting down on characters wouldn’t even matter.

“Sonic comes first and his gameplay should be of a good standard before implementing other characters. Would you call Sonic’s gameplay in 06 a good standard??”
No one is saying sonic shouldn’t come first, but his game in 06 was better then what we got afterwords. Outside of being a bit slower, it gave more room for action platforming, and without being on rails, you had more freedom of movement, until you get to the high speed stages, now those needed more work, but didn’t need entire games focused on it.

  3. I cant even bother with you anymore. You constantly claim I’m doing something that I’m not just because your butt-hurt that you can’t playable as your favorite characters. Luckily, Sega agree with me and not you. Every since 06, only as been playable (in the important games) and t hat looks to be the case for the near future. Look at Generations and Lost World, Sonic games are becoming less linear, so there you go. Bye.
